The definition of training is: capable of being trained. One characteristic of a Rottweiler is his/her ability to be trained. Rottweilers are very smart and are an easy breed to train. Being very smart is one of the top qualities of a Rottweiler which is a positive quality. However, a Rottweiler WILL need training. A good puppy starts with a great dam and sire which makes a difference is the trainability of the Rottweiler puppy.
Importance of Training Your Rott
My wife works with technology teacher/coordinator in an elementary school building of 1000 plus students. She will say that a Rottweiler puppy is much like a child. A child entering the public school system that has not been “trained” in the first five years of life will most likely be the child that his/her Kindergarten teacher knows their name before the first day of school attendance. Then the school system has to teach the child their letters and sounds along with rules of behavior which complicates the education process greatly.
Training a Rottweiler puppy takes time and energy, much like raising a child. It is something that should start from the day a person takes the puppy into their home. It is easier to train a puppy to do the right thing than it is to correct behaviors later.
Formal Training: Yes or No
When we say a Rottweiler puppy will need training, this means they WILL need training whether it be from you or from a professional trainer. This decision is up to the dog owner. If you are an experienced dog owner, you may opt to do training on your own. If you have the financial means to take your animal to obedience training and have a quality trainer that is great option as well. The trainer will train your Rottweiler puppy and work with you to continue the training process in your home for consistency and greater results.
Training Your Rott Vs. Discipline
The definition of discipline is to: train (someone) to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience. Discipline is to be used only when training rule has been violated intentionally. A consistent training program will significantly reduce the need for discipline. Remember that a Rott is very similar to raising a child. (I would venture to say that training a Rottweiler is easier than training a child.)
A good training program will set the expectations for your Rottweiler puppy. When a well bred Rottweiler is trained well, they will be a great addition to your home.
