The Puppy Birthing Area

birthing area

When a female Rottweiler is ready to deliver, we bring them in to the garage from the shed/kennel two weeks prior to possible delivery date. We start checking them at night and watching for signs of the onset of labor. Most females will start scratching at the carpet, ripping paper, and other nesting-type activity when the time is getting close. The real sign is when they quit eating. Then we start checking on the female Rott every hour. It is not uncommon for one of us to sleep in the twin bed that we have in the garage.

Once hard labor starts, two people are needed. One person works with the female Rott and one to handle the puppies. The birthing process can be anywhere from five to tens hours depending on the size of the litter.

The first two weeks with a Rottweiler puppy are critical. If it is a large litter of nine or so, we will split them into groups of five and four and rotate them in and out. This means we have to call in the help of Kevin’s parents during the day. It takes a village to raise a litter of puppies.

This is the front two kennels. The pen has a door allowing the Rottweilers to run in and out. During the winter, the shed is heated if necessary to keep pens warm.

This is the kennels in the back. The shed is heated and has air conditioning to keep kennel at comfortable temperature in extreme conditions.
Adult Rottweilers are taken on morning and evening walks. Walks are taken in the Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.
